The practices of vascular access are
complicated varied and changing constantly. Articles
which deal with these practices to stay current with
recent developments in the field. To simplify this
challenge, we have surveyed the literature and compiled
key highlights in a new publications, Meditheses.
Each issue of Meditheses
will present a different topic related to the field of
vascular access. The format will feature full clinical
reprints, abstracted articles and a bibliography of
appropriate references related to that topic.
This issue covers
pinch-off and catheter fracture, uncommon complications
which can easily be diagnosed and, in fact, can often be
prevented. An article by Drs. Aitken and Minton, first
published in 1984 and today considered a reference
standard, reviews the anatomy and etiology of pinch-off.
A reprint authored by Hinke highlights the fact that this
complication can, in some cases, be diagnosed with an
upright chest film, arms at the sides, and that not all
catheters showing evidence of pinch-off and fracture.
Future issues of
Meditheses will cover additional developments in the
filed of vascular access. Suggestions for specific topics
are welcomed by the editorial board. A reply card has
been included for this purpose. We hope you find Meditheses to be of
value to your practice. We look forward to your comments
and suggestions.
